The Attendant

The Shammash – the "attendant" candle is the first candle light on the Memorah and is used to kindle the other lights. It is forbidden to make use of the actual Chanukah-candles because that would be demeaning to the Mitzvah. This unique rule, that Chanukah lights are not for personal needs but only spiritual is reflected in the message of Chanukah.

The Shammash teaches us the potential we all have to be a light for others. Just as the shammash is usually placed above the other candles, a person who serves others becomes elevated because they are using their skills to make others great too. The path to elevation is not through pushing others down, but by sharing with them and bring out the inner flame they carry within.
